Privacy Policy

Information we collect

Account information: your email address and password. Your password is never stored directly; it's securely hashed by our authentication provider, Supabase.

Learning data: the vocabulary words, translations, notes, categories, sentences, notebook pages, conversation transcripts and quiz results you create while using the app.

Usage data: your learning streak, timezone (used only to calculate what counts as “today” for streaks), coins and XP totals, per-feature usage counters (used to enforce usage limits), and general activity like quiz scores and focus-session length.

Third-party services we use

We rely on a small number of trusted providers to run VocaShelf:

• Supabase - hosts our database, handles authentication, and stores generated pronunciation and sentence audio.
• Google Cloud (Translate, Text-to-Speech and Speech-to-Text) - powers auto-translate, spoken pronunciation, and voice input in the speech quizzes and Conversation Buddy. Text or audio you send to these features is transmitted to Google for processing.
• Google Gemini - powers the AI word tools (Explain, Example sentence, Suggest words, Compare words), the Sentence Analyzer and Conversation Buddy. The words, sentences and messages involved are sent to Google's Gemini API to generate a response.
• Vercel - hosts the application and serves it to your browser.
• Sentry - collects error reports (stack traces and basic request context) so we can fix bugs. It is not used to profile you.
• Cloudflare Turnstile - a privacy-friendly bot check on the sign-up and password-reset forms.

None of these providers use your data for advertising, and we don't sell or share your data with anyone else.

Cookies

We use a small number of functional cookies: to keep you signed in, to remember your active language, and to detect your timezone for accurate streak tracking. We don't use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.

Data retention & deletion

Your data is kept for as long as your account exists. You can permanently delete your account and everything in it at any time from Settings, or delete a single language and its words, sentences and quiz history without deleting your whole account. Both are immediate and irreversible.

Children's privacy

VocaShelf is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.

Changes to this policy

As the app evolves, this policy may change. We'll update the date above when it does.
